Plumber Tighes Hill: Heritage Cottage Plumbing Done Right

This cottage grid between Maitland Road and Throsby Creek sits on our regular run out of Carrington. We're in these streets most weeks fixing drains, hot water and everything in between.

Cottages from the colliery era, plumbed accordingly

Tighes Hill grew from the 1877 opening of the Ferndale Colliery bridge over Throsby Creek, and the streets still hold Victorian and Federation weatherboard cottages and brick terraces from that era. Census figures put the suburb at 683 dwellings, with 86.5% of them separate houses, most of that stock pre-1940.

That age shows up in the pipework in three predictable ways:

  • Sewer runs laid when the tram line arrived in 1894 still serve parts of the suburb, and the earthenware sections fail joint by joint under the cottages.
  • Many weatherboard cottages were plumbed in galvanised steel that is now furred solid, showing up as poor flow to back-of-house bathrooms.
  • The leafy streets that make the suburb desirable feed roots straight into old cracked drainage lines beneath front gardens.

Renovators here also find lead-soldered joints on older copper repairs, and old gas pipe left over from the gas-lighting era must be traced and capped during renovations. We handle all of it.

What we cover on this run

The full service list lives on the hubs, each one written for this corner of the Hunter:

Summer downpours load the stormwater system fast here, with runoff surging off the TAFE campus hardstand, so blocked stormwater and yard lines get their own attention.

Made Right, No Questions Asked

If something isn't up to standard, we come back and make it right. No arguing, no fine print.

The cottage grid keeps us busy with supply pipe swaps and drain relines, and the same standard holds on every one of them.

Streets and neighbours on the same run

We work the whole grid, from Elizabeth Street and Union Street through to Tighes Terrace and the terraces near Young Street Reserve, plus the Hannell Street commercial strip. Jobs near the creek side get planned for the damp alluvium, where trench works strike water quickly.

The same run covers the adjoining suburbs, each with its own page:

Plumbing questions from the cottage grid

Why do the drains here block so often?

Much of the suburb still runs on glazed clay sewers from the 1890s, and a century in shifting ground cracks the joints while street tree roots find every crack.

Should corroded galvanised water pipes be replaced?

Yes, once furred solid they are past saving. The tell is poor flow at a back-of-house bathroom while front taps run strong, and the fix is replacing back to the meter.

Does the damp ground near Throsby Creek affect plumbing work?

It can. The ground falls to Throsby Creek on two sides, so lower trenches strike water fast, and we quote creek-side digs with those wet conditions priced in from the start.

Can old gas pipe runs from the gas-lighting era be dealt with?

Some cottages still carry redundant pipe from the early gas-lighting conversions. We trace each run, confirm nothing is live, and cap it properly, which is what a pre-purchase inspection looks for.

Do you work on businesses along Hannell Street?

Yes. The commercial strip on former industrial land, plus cafes and facilities around the TAFE campus, get the same coverage as the cottages, scheduled outside trading hours where that suits.

Is there a call-out fee?

No. Every job starts with a $0 call out and the price on paper before work begins, and you approve it or we shake hands and leave, no charge.
